In narrative contexts, transportation has been found to be an important route to persuasion based on realistic stimuli (Green and Brock 2000). After extending transportation to motion pictures trailers, this study shows that (i) individuals high in fantasy proneness experience higher levels of transportation, which is linked to higher level of attitude towards the movie and willingness to watch it; (ii) individuals can be induced to use their fantasy; (iii) when individual fantasy is activated transportation is higher both for realistic and not realistic stimuli. Four experiments indicate that individual fantasy acts as a booster of cognitive ability, enhancing the interpretation of the provided stimuli either reality- or fantasy-related.
