Scholars agree in considering the interviewer a central figure in the research process, but the degree of agreement decreases when the debate refers to the behaviors and work styles that the interviewer have to adopt. Behaviorists argue that the interviewer has to strictly follow the standards set by the researcher, other scholars take a radically different approach, inspired by the appreciation of a certain degree of autonomy and responsibility of the interviewer. Based on these two theoretical models, were carried out 26 interviews to professional CATI interviewers, each of them was asked to reconstruct the strategies they adopt to address and overcome the problems and difficulties they encounter when interacting with the interviewees. The different behaviors of the interviewers were conceptualized along a continuum between obedience to the interview protocol established by the researcher and autonomy in managing the difficulties that arise during the interviews. To study the different styles of interview the effects of different forms of training and supervision, the effects of the involvement of interviewers with respect to the research theme, the fulfillments that you can have doing the job interviewer were considered.
