With its location and form laid out more than 2,000 years ago, the present city of Rome, Italy, resisted adaptations and measures which its growth and intensification of urban transportation required. Without comprehensive transportation policies, the city went through a long period of deteriorating transportation conditions: increasing auto ownership, intensifying street congestion, decline in transit use, and neglect of pedestrians. This trend had serious negative impacts on its economy, environmental conditions and quality of life. Since the 1990s, however, authorities began to realize that continuation of these trends will lead to increasing problems and prevent sustainability. A number of initiatives and actions intended to reverse these trends have been undertaken. Progress in implementation of measures aimed at achieving a more livable and sustainable city are described
