This paper describes a mathematical model for the numerical design of Axial Flux Permanent magnet synchronous Machines (AFPMs). The mathematical model allows the calculation of the machine quantities by means of a three dimensional finite element algorithm. A finite element formulation using a scalar potential function developed by the authors is discussed. The algorithms allow the accurate evaluation of the main machine quantities, such as flux linkages and phase back emf.

Abstract
