In this paper we report self-trapping of subnanojoule femtosecond near-infrared beams in photonic-grade undoped bulk lithium niobate under application of an external dc electric field. We show that the phenomenon occurs thanks to the photorefractive effect induced by a weak second-harmonic component generated under large velocity mismatch. It offers a way to extend lithium niobate's photorefractive response to the near-infrared spectrum for peak intensity lower than 1 GW/cm(2), which is three orders of magnitude lower than reported in the literature.

Abstract

In this paper we report self-trapping of subnanojoule femtosecond near-infrared beams in photonic-grade undoped bulk lithium niobate under application of an external dc electric field. We show that the phenomenon occurs thanks to the photorefractive effect induced by a weak second-harmonic component generated under large velocity mismatch. It offers a way to extend lithium niobate's photorefractive response to the near-infrared spectrum for peak intensity lower than 1 GW/cm(2), which is three orders of magnitude lower than reported in the literature.
