In recent years, Islam and Muslims are very significant in public debate, because of issues linked to international politics (Islamist terrorism, military interventions in Afghanistan and Iraq, etc..), and because of the radicalization of some positions in western countries about the challenges of cultural integration of immigrants (many of whom come from states with a Muslim majority). This salience in public discourse is accompanied by a widespread (and acknowledged, at least in the scientific literature) process of distortion of Islam, operated especially by mass-media. The book reconstructs the mechanisms of representation of Islam within the Italian media scenario, connecting: 1. general and theoretical considerations; 2. aspects shown in scientific literature; 3. empirical evidence derived from research activities carried out by the author. This empirical section, investigating and quantifying the representation of Islam in the Italian media, has allowed to isolate the main "stereotyped forms", analyzing and highlighting the most important and those of longer duration. Finally, the book emphasizes the predominantly "visual" dimension of stereotypes; through an analysis of icons and images of Islam in his “mediated” version, it’s showed the capability of media system to create and reinforce stereotypical representations of Islam.

Abstract
Finally, the book emphasizes the predominantly "visual" dimension of stereotypes; through an analysis of icons and images of Islam in his “mediated” version, it’s showed the capability of media system to create and reinforce stereotypical representations of Islam.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
