Sunflower oil is normally extracted by means of organic solvents or, for quality-aware consumer markets, by cold pressing. An alternative to this latter method is offered by supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) by means of non-toxic carbon dioxide. However, the evaluation of the economic feasibility of this alternative must be carried out taking quality issues into account and their relation with process operating conditions and schedule. The present work shows an approach to the modeling of product quality during the SFE of sunflower oil with carbon dioxide by adopting oil acidity as the reference quality parameter and discusses possible strategies for quality-aware process optimisation.

Abstract
Sunflower oil is normally extracted by means of organic solvents or, for quality-aware consumer markets, by cold pressing. An alternative to this latter method is offered by supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) by means of non-toxic carbon dioxide. However, the evaluation of the economic feasibility of this alternative must be carried out taking quality issues into account and their relation with process operating conditions and schedule. The present work shows an approach to the modeling of product quality during the SFE of sunflower oil with carbon dioxide by adopting oil acidity as the reference quality parameter and discusses possible strategies for quality-aware process optimisation.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
