A novel low cost bistable coupled-waveguide switch based on voltage controlled reorientation of a surface stabilised ferroelectric liquid crystal (FLC) is reported. Switching times of the device measured from the optical response are also reported. Improvements of the device performance in terms of higher extinction ratios are obtained by depositing a more uniform alignment layer.

Abstract
A novel low cost bistable coupled-waveguide switch based on voltage controlled reorientation of a surface stabilised ferroelectric liquid crystal (FLC) is reported. Switching times of the device measured from the optical response are also reported. Improvements of the device performance in terms of higher extinction ratios are obtained by depositing a more uniform alignment layer.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
