Kapton H [25036-53-7] polymers with the structure I are held together by Van der Waals and, probably, charge-transfer forces, and are ordered mainly along the fiber axis, but show little order in the packing of adjacent helixes. X-ray anal. data fit a model in which the COC angle is 130, and the segments joining the ether O atoms form a planar zigzag chain. The proposed crystal packing contains a 2 monomer unit cell with a = 4.66, b = 32.9, c = 5.66.ANG., .beta. = 100, probably of space group P21. An intrachain vector distribution map, computed by rotating the diimide unit of the N-C bond, was compared with a 1-dimensional Patterson synthesis calcd. along b, to det. .theta.. The Van der Waals energy was calcd. as a function of .theta. and of the rotation around the helical axis of the polymer chains. _
