In the electrified metro-transit system of Rome, on the 20 kV bus-bar of the terminal electrical substations (ESS), some Instrument Voltage Transformers (IVTs) are installed. In this system, for all the terminal ESS, several cases of IVT faults have been detected; only a little number of IVTs are survived and the Company operating the system (Met.Ro. S.p.A.) required a laboratory survey to know their faults cause. At the same time a power quality (PQ) monitoring activity has been performed on the system: some significant overvoltages, associated to the SF6 switches operations, with a very fast front but with values out of the typical range, have been recorded. To point out a possible correlation between faults and overvoltages, a measurement campaign on IVTs has been performed in laboratory and, in order to verify their impact on overvoltages measurements and the cause of their failure, a comparison with an other type of IVT has been carried out. The present paper reports the preliminary results of tests and measurements .
