A CrN/NbN coating has been deposited by physical vapour deposition on a substrate constituted by a tool steel: the process temperature was lower than the substrate annealing temperature. The CrN/NbN coating, having a thickness of about 2 μm, has been characterized by SEM/EDS and XRD: its tribological performances have been evaluated and compared with those of uncoated specimens tested under the same dry sliding conditions. The results pointed out that CrN/NbN coatings have clearly superior characteristics and well meet the demanding requirements to increase hardness and wear resistance of dies and forging tools.

Abstract
A CrN/NbN coating has been deposited by physical vapour deposition on a substrate constituted by a tool steel: the process temperature was lower than the substrate annealing temperature. The CrN/NbN coating, having a thickness of about 2 μm, has been characterized by SEM/EDS and XRD: its tribological performances have been evaluated and compared with those of uncoated specimens tested under the same dry sliding conditions. The results pointed out that CrN/NbN coatings have clearly superior characteristics and well meet the demanding requirements to increase hardness and wear resistance of dies and forging tools.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
