The paper presents a numerical approach to determing the optimal vehicle control for acceleration process on roads of different slopes. The method described is based to optimal control theory and a mathematical model of vehicle dynamics. An original algorithm based on the Minimum Principle, was developed to face mixed nature of optimized controls (continuous and discrete). The model of longitudinal vehicle motion consists of non-linear state equations, engine fuel rate, torque and speed relationships and road load curves. Some parameters of model were calculated on the basis of experimental data. Calculations were done for an urban bus equipped with diesel engine. To verify the model fuel consumption versus steady state velocity and gear number was computed and compared with actual values. Two criteria of minimization are considered, namely fuel consumption and time of bus acceleration to the velocity Vmax. The optimized control vector includes percentage of propelling torque and gear radio, considered as functions of time. In the end the results obtained are discussed. The paper presents the fuel saving strategies and the time saving strategies for various values of road slope.
