This study belongs to the research area aimed to study maternal and paternal representations during pregnancy conceived as significant indicators of the construction of parental identity which will be fully developed after the birth of the child. Specifically, we wanted to explore the narratives of fathers expecting their first child, achieved through the administration of a semi-structured interview (IRPAG) built upon our previous interview for mothers (Ammaniti et al., 1995), trying to emphasize the mental representations matched to the move to fatherhood. The sample included 130 middle class fathers from the center of Italy, expecting their first child. Data will be examined by factor analysis both in relation to the scales of the representation of the man of himself as a father and the scales of representation of his child. The interviews' coding allowed to identify three different patterns of paternal representation. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved) (journal abstract)
