Population aging is associated with the duration of life, the increase in life expectancy and falling fertility. This phenomenon has major implications for pension systems in European countries: this is certainly one of its most immediate and visible consequence. But at the same time, we live better and longer, meaning that biological aging and population aging vary in opposite directions. That should imply a review of statistical and demographic aging measures, to take into account of apparent differences caused by the evolution of human lifespan. Demographic structure definitions, boundaries of age groups and age groups themselves need therefore to be questioned.

Abstract

Population aging is associated with the duration of life, the increase in life expectancy and falling fertility. This phenomenon has major implications for pension systems in European countries: this is certainly one of its most immediate and visible consequence. But at the same time, we live better and longer, meaning that biological aging and population aging vary in opposite directions. That should imply a review of statistical and demographic aging measures, to take into account of apparent differences caused by the evolution of human lifespan. Demographic structure definitions, boundaries of age groups and age groups themselves need therefore to be questioned.
