A process development-oriented hierarchic compartmental mathematical model is presented, capable of describing the growth and lipid storage occurring in a (photo-)bioreactor. The underlying biochemical model is designed for coping with an anphitrophic biomass and the overall process model is designed to exploit that biomass in a possibly spatially and/or temporally alternated mixotrophic/heterotrophic operation schedule.
