A well 100 m deep was drilled on the coastal plain 6 km north to the main Tevere river mouth, within the survey of the Geological Map of Italy 1:50,000 scale - sheet 386 Fiumicino. Detailed sedimentological, biostratigraphical (foraminifers and calcareous nannofossils) and pollen analyses have been carried out, together with 14C dating, ?18O, and ?13C measure and CaCO3 content to better constrain the most important events in the Upper Pleistocene-Holocene evolution of the area, especially during the last glacio-eustatic cycle. An interpretation of stratigraphic succession in terms of sequence stratigraphy is also proposed. Preliminary results from the analyses are presented. The Pesce Luna well covers a chronostratigraphic interval ranging from the Lower Pleistocene to present time; Middle-Upper Pleistocene deposits occur only for a reduced thickness. These deposits are ascribed to the two composite third-order sequences recognised in outcrop in the surrounding area, named Monte Mario Sequence Auct. (MMS, Lower Pleistocene) and Ponte Galeria Sequence Auct. (PGS, Middle-Upper Pleistocene to present).
