The paper provides with the most updated state of the art concerning the research activities developed within the Network of Excellence for railway research (EURNEX), financed by the EC since 2004, particularly in the several thematic areas, which are going to be addressed in the field of the operation and system performance. For these topics the most recent developments and results on key areas will be shortly presented and references in terms of national and international publications will be provided for the possible acquisition of more details on methodological approaches and practical applicability review.
