Ultra Wide Band (UWB) technology is rapidly maturing for wireless digital communications. This technology can be flexibly used to provide access to Internet services by extending the fixed network both relying on an infrastructure constituted by Access Points and in an ad-hoc fashion. In this paper we present the main principles for the radio resource sharing in an UWB packet radio network. We describe both a theoretical and practical approach for the design of a distributed algorithm based on a joint power and bit rate assignment. We address the procedures of a distributed protocol for the support of Dynamic Bandwidth service class and Reserved one. Finally we present performance results from a simulation study and we discuss the tradeoff between throughput optimization and fairness.
