H-1 and P-31 NMR "ex vivo" spectra show a decrease in N-acetyl-aspartate (NAA), glutamate (Glu) and aspartate (Asp) levels and an increase in myo-inositol (myo-ins) in the brain of aged rats as compared to adult ones. No significant changes were observed in metabolites involved in energy balance. Prolonged Nicergoline oral treatment induced a significant increase in Glu and NAA levels of aged rat brain. An improvement of cerebral glucose utilization in treated aged rats, as evaluated by means of C-13 NMR spectroscopy, was also demonstrated
