Il territorio può interpretarsi come il prodotto di una reciproca influenza di fenomeni fisici naturali e di fenomeni legati all'azione dell'uomo; di conseguenza, il termine territorio può definirsi una interazione delle attività antropiche con l'ambiente naturale. L'ingegnere-architetto interviene sul territorio modificandolo con opere, oltre che di tutela, anche di progettazione di nuove aree di sviluppo residenziale e produttivo, di infrastrutture e di servizi, e, affinchè ogni modifica avvenga nel rispetto del patrimonio naturale, storico ed artistico esistente, senza demolire e distruggere ciò che esiste, è necessario eseguire prima un processo di analisi, di studio e di conoscenza dell'ambiente in cui si interviene. Questo processo di lettura può essere intrapreso attraverso la rappresentazione che va, quindi, considerata come uno strumento di analisi e di sintesi delle varie interpretazione della realtà in cui operiamo.
