This paper deals with INFONET II, i.e. a LAN/MAN optical fiber architecture conceived to integrate the isochronous and non isochronous traffic handling in an ATM environment. The aim of the work is to present a new access protocol for non-isochronous traffic which has the goal of improving the throughput/delay performances of the early version of INFONET. In particular, the main issues addressed in the paper are: the network structure, the arrangement of the physical interface of the network stations, the MAC procedure and the overload control mechanism. Finally a case study is considered in order to evaluate the network performances.

Abstract
This paper deals with INFONET II, i.e. a LAN/MAN optical fiber architecture conceived to integrate the isochronous and non isochronous traffic handling in an ATM environment. The aim of the work is to present a new access protocol for non-isochronous traffic which has the goal of improving the throughput/delay performances of the early version of INFONET. In particular, the main issues addressed in the paper are: the network structure, the arrangement of the physical interface of the network stations, the MAC procedure and the overload control mechanism. Finally a case study is considered in order to evaluate the network performances.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
