The study of the induced drag reduction in a formation flight is carried out. The problem has been investigated, both in and out of the ground effect, by means of a simple aerodynamic model based on the lifting line theory. The optimum configuration for the minimum induced drag is analyzed as function of the main geometrical and aerodynamic parameters and the results obtained have been discussed and compared against some numerical and experimental data available in the literature. © 2003 by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Inc. Abstract
