In this paper we analyze the problem of designing the Medium Access Control (MAC) module under Quality of Service (QoS) constraints for real-time services. The attention is focused on the case of slowly time-varying channels, such as in Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs), and an analytical approach for the optimization of transmission efficiency is presented. In the paper we also propose a novel Automatic Repeat on reQuest (ARQ) protocol which allows reduction of protective overhead for each transmitted data unit, resulting in a minimum increase of reserved bandwidth.

Abstract
In this paper we analyze the problem of designing the Medium Access Control (MAC) module under Quality of Service (QoS) constraints for real-time services. The attention is focused on the case of slowly time-varying channels, such as in Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs), and an analytical approach for the optimization of transmission efficiency is presented. In the paper we also propose a novel Automatic Repeat on reQuest (ARQ) protocol which allows reduction of protective overhead for each transmitted data unit, resulting in a minimum increase of reserved bandwidth.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
