This chapter focuses on the concept of genre and its typologies in opera from its beginnings to the early twentieth century. The so-called ‘invention’ of opera is closely observed, as are the profound aesthetic and critical changes that took place between the late eighteenth and the early nineteenth century. Specific attention is given to the institutions that promoted particular genres, and to the ideologies that supported them, or that were supported by different genres in their turn. The role of the public is also closely investigated.
