This article focuses on the baptismal font from the Church of Our Lady of Termonde, produced by a stone workshop in Tournai that specialized in producing baptismal fonts in Belgian black stone. The font features a relief that local scholars recognize as the “Conversion of Saint Paul”. If so, this would be the first surviving monumental work in Western Christianity depicting the scene of the conversion with the saint falling from a horse. However, careful study of historical sources and contem- porary artistic production allows us to cast doubt on this iconography and propose new hypotheses for deciphering the scene.

Abstract
This article focuses on the baptismal font from the Church of Our Lady of Termonde, produced by a stone workshop in Tournai that specialized in producing baptismal fonts in Belgian black stone. The font features a relief that local scholars recognize as the “Conversion of Saint Paul”. If so, this would be the first surviving monumental work in Western Christianity depicting the scene of the conversion with the saint falling from a horse. However, careful study of historical sources and contem- porary artistic production allows us to cast doubt on this iconography and propose new hypotheses for deciphering the scene.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
