Una nuova applicazione per l’indice VARI e il Vegetation Fraction per le ricognizioni e la redazione della carta archeologica

The paper presents the experimentation of the use of the VARI vegetative index for a different purpose than the original one of reading the vegetative vigour of plant coverage. Several tests demonstrated how the response to the VARI of pottery dispersion in ploughed fields is decisive (with an extremely low value), allowing for the identification and localisation of the areas of pottery fragments. The processing of this vegetative index, which uses only the RGB electromagnetic bands, opens the way to a new method of aerial survey, preliminary to the one on the field, or to the possibility of using old aerial images where direct survey is no longer possible. Finally, an experimentation is presented on the use of Vegetation Fraction as a digital method for realise the visibility map in the context of the drafting of the archaeological map.
