The subject of this study – the result of a three-year research project – examines the transmission of knowledge within nineteenth-century Italian theatre companies of tradition and, more specifically, within the cultural and working environment of theatrical families (famiglie d’arte). The study begins with the distinctive “mental grammar” of the figlio d’arte (the child of actors), whose professional identity was shaped through an artisanal system of learning in which daily life within the company and close contact with experienced performers formed the basis of theatrical training. More specifically, this research identifies a series of key elements that together outline a pedagogical model. While not intended to provide a complete account, the study seeks to reconstruct the cultural, social, and practical dynamics of a complex theatrical system in which acting knowledge was transmitted largely through practice rather than through written texts or theoretical instruction. For this reason, the research combines historical analysis with anthropological perspectives, using insights from the study of predominantly oral cultures to better understand how theatrical knowledge and professional skills were passed on from one generation to the next. The dissertation first examines the educational function of the role system, exploring both the changes it underwent during the nineteenth century and the practical logic that shaped its use. Particular attention is given to its connection with the personalization of stage language and with the gradual progression through the different stages of an actor’s professional development. The second part focuses on the figure of the master and on the teacher-student relationship, highlighting the personal and emotional dimensions that played a central role in the process of apprenticeship. A key section of the dissertation is devoted to the experience of the Compagnia dei Giovani, directed by Gustavo Modena. Through this case study, the research explores some of the ideas for pedagogical reform that would later influence Italian theatre culture at the end of the nineteenth century. The study then turns to the relationship between figli d’arte and amateur performers, focusing on the educational implications of this encounter. Particular attention is given to the processes through which theatrical knowledge came to be formalized and objectified, especially in acting manuals and in preparatory training programmes offered by educational institutions. The dissertation concludes by examining two contemporary theatre experiences whose working methods and cultural practices preserve important features of the ways in which knowledge was produced and transmitted within nineteenth-century traditional theatre companies.
