This introductory essay to the volume “Performing Classics Today” offers a reflection on musical performance as a site of interaction between historical memory, creative agency, and multiple temporalities. Maurizio Pollini’s transhistorical concert programming and Josep Colom’s use of improvisatory transitions provide the starting points for exploring how performance can challenge established listening habits and conventional notions of the musical work. The concept of the “anachronic” developed by Alexander Nagel and Christopher Wood provides the theoretical framework for interpreting performance as a temporal and historiographical practice in which repetition and reinvention, continuity and transformation coexist. Within this interpretative framework, the essay presents the contributions to the volume and highlights the fluid relationships between composition, improvisation, interpretation, and performance in historical and contemporary practices. From this perspective, performance emerges as a form of creative and critical mediation through which the past is continually reactivated in the present and opened up to future possibilities.

Abstract
From this perspective, performance emerges as a form of creative and critical mediation through which the past is continually reactivated in the present and opened up to future possibilities.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
