Quattro disegni di Francesco Mancini per il Duomo di Foligno

In 1719, Francesco Mancini was cho- sen to fresco the apse and the presbytery of the Cathedral of Foligno, prevailing over prominent competitors such as Nasi- ni, Trevisani, and Odazzi. The frescoes, completed in 1723, depict Saint Felician entrusting the city of Foligno to Religion and Saint Felician borne into Glory by angels. This article presents, for the first time, four drawings by Mancini, previous- ly misattributed to Francesco Monti on the Bolognese antiquarian market, which are connected to this commission. It also examines the stylistic affinities and differ- ences between the two artists, who were frequently confused with one another in the past. The rediscovery of these sheets enriches the study of Mancini’s graphic production, which, despite its high quality, remains insufficiently explored in current scholarship.
