The article examines the decisive role of the Kashmir Valley as the cultural environment in which the Mokṣopāya, a vast Sanskrit work of the ninth century, originated. By retracing the geographical, historical, and doctrinal references found in the text, the study argues that the work emerged from the same milieu that witnessed the rise of non-dual Śaiva tantrism, namely the sphere of the siddha, mystical figures, endowed with supernatural powers, who shaped the transmission of knowledge and the region’s religious syncretism. The Mokṣopāya thus appears as a direct expression of the Kashmiri climate of dialogue and exchange among Buddhism, Śaivism, and Vaiṣṇavism, a context that made possible a non-sectarian philosophical synthesis.

Abstract
The article examines the decisive role of the Kashmir Valley as the cultural environment in which the Mokṣopāya, a vast Sanskrit work of the ninth century, originated. By retracing the geographical, historical, and doctrinal references found in the text, the study argues that the work emerged from the same milieu that witnessed the rise of non-dual Śaiva tantrism, namely the sphere of the siddha, mystical figures, endowed with supernatural powers, who shaped the transmission of knowledge and the region’s religious syncretism. The Mokṣopāya thus appears as a direct expression of the Kashmiri climate of dialogue and exchange among Buddhism, Śaivism, and Vaiṣṇavism, a context that made possible a non-sectarian philosophical synthesis.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
