Vasari negli studi di Lionello Venturi

This essay analyses the passages devoted by Lionello Venturi to Giorgio Vasari’s *Lives*, highlighting the role of Vasari’s historiographical model in the critical art history produced by the scholar. Moving on from the studies of the 1920s—which sought to analyse Vasari’s judgements on artists, the prejudices that marred his interpretation, and the fusion of theory and historiography he achieved in the *Lives*—the text goes on to examine the speech in which, in 1950, at the conference marking the 400th anniversary of the Torrentini edition, Venturi drew attention to certain theoretical insights intuited by Vasari. Viewed through the lens of Croce’s aesthetics, Vasari’s text is both an emblem of a tradition whose limitations Venturi sought to transcend and a part of the art history that he himself produced.

Il saggio analizza le pagine dedicate da Lionello Venturi alle Vite di Giorgio Vasari, specificando il ruolo del modello storiografico dell’aretino nella storia critica dell’arte prodotta dallo studioso. Dagli studi degli anni Venti, volti ad analizzare i giudizi formulati da Vasari sugli artisti, i pregiudizi che viziarono la sua lettura e la fusione di teoria e storiografia da questi da questi realizzata nelle Vite, il testo passa ad analizzare l’intervento con il quale, nel 1950, in occasione del convegno per il IV centenario dell’edizione torrentiniana, Venturi portava l’attenzione su alcune verità di natura teorica intuite dall’aretino. Mediato dall’estetica crociana, il testo di Vasari risulta a contempo emblema di una tradizione di cui Venturi intendeva di superare i limiti e parte della storia dell’arte che egli produce.
