Veena Das’s Life and Words offers a decisive intervention in contemporary debates in anthropology and philosophy through its distinctive practice of writing the ordinary. Rather than reducing the Partition and the massacres of Sikhs after the assassination of Indira Gandhi to the vocabulary of trauma, Das shows how past violence continues to inhabit the present, inscribed in gestures, silences, and everyday practices of care. Her ethnography resists forms of writing that yield only despair or that fix protagonists in a scene of pure victimhood designed for political denunciation. Instead, she brings to light the fragile yet real possibilities that take shape within ordinary life. In doing so, the book – now regarded as a reference point – opens a new perspective for anthropology and philosophy alike, revealing an ordinary fractured by violence yet sustained in gestures, silences, and practices through which life is re-inhabited and experience transfigured.
