Nuove ipotesi sui progetti di Antonio da Sangallo il Giovane per la propria casa in via Giulia

The first of the two houses that Antonio da Sangallo the Younger built for himself in Via Giulia in Rome is the so-called ‘Casa di Banchi’ today known as ‘Palazzo Medici-Clarelli’. Despite being the subject of numerous studies, it still presents several unclear aspects. The building still extant doesn’t match the architect’s surviving autograph project sketches; moreover, there are noticeable anomalies when compared to Sangallo’s architectural style. This paper proposes a reinterpretation of the sources, particularly the graphical ones, to offer new insights into the design process and building phases of the ‘palazzetto’. The goal is to address the ongoing questions surrounding this highly personal work, yet generally considered the most architecturally distant from Sangallo’s known architectural language, while also situating the project within a Vitruvian theoretical framework.
