Due Pergamene inedite del tabulario di Santa Maria di Licodia e San Nicolò l’Arena: le cartulae di Tommaso Anglicus (1210) e di Giacomo de Protopapa

The study presents two previously unpublished charters from the cartulary of the monasteries of Santa Maria di Licodia and San Nicolò l’Arena (1210 and 1215), concerning the donations made by Tommaso Anglicus and Giacomo de Protopapa. The analysis of these documents makes it possible to investigate patrimonial dynamics and the relationships between monastic institutions and local elites in the Etnean area during the Swabian period. The sources highlight the growing role of the abbey as an attractive center for the local notability and reveal a composite society characterized by the coexistence of Greek, Latin, Anglo, and French elements. Particular attention is given to the active role of women in property management, the level of notarial culture, and the persistence of Latin-Greek bilingual practices. The cartulae thus emerge as valuable tools for understanding strategies of legitimation and self-representation among elites within the context of the Regnum Siciliae.

Lo studio presenta due pergamene inedite del tabulario dei monasteri di Santa Maria di Licodia e San Nicolò l’Arena (1210 e 1215), relative alle donazioni di Tommaso Anglicus e Giacomo de Protopapa. L’analisi dei documenti consente di indagare le dinamiche patrimoniali e i rapporti tra istituzioni monastiche ed élites locali nell’area etnea in età sveva. Le fonti evidenziano il ruolo crescente dell’abbazia quale polo attrattivo per il notabilato zonale e mettono in luce una società composita, caratterizzata dalla compresenza di elementi greci, latini, angli e francesi. Particolare rilievo assumono il ruolo attivo delle donne nella gestione dei beni, la qualità della cultura notarile e la persistenza di pratiche bilingui latino-greche. Le cartulae si configurano, così, come strumenti privilegiati per comprendere le strategie di legittimazione e autorappresentazione delle élites nel contesto del Regnum Siciliae.
