Ethiopian documentary manuscripts and recent related studies provide interesting evidence for the development of a specific terminology to indicate composite and multiple-text manuscripts. On the base of some recent contributions and proposals, the present note elaborates on the concept of documentary manuscripts as archives and takes position on the question of the relevance of this evidence for editorial and text-critical methodology in general.
