This article explores a little-known episode in the life of Stefano Delle Chiaie – his brief mission to the leader of Angola’s UNITA, Jonas Savimbi, early in 1976 – with the aim of contributing to transnational reinterpretations of neo-fascist extremism during the Cold War and of foregrounding the role of the African continent within these subversive networks. The main argument of the article – based primarily on Italian and international judicial and police sources – is that Delle Chiaie’s journey must be placed in the context of the operations of Aginter Presse, the secret organisation to which Delle Chiaie was formally affiliated from the early 1970s, and that, at the same time, it marked the definitive end of that organisation’s African entanglements. From that moment on, what remained of the Aginter and its offshoot, the so-called Madrid group, shifted its attentions away from Africa and towards South America’s military dictatorships.
