Abstract: In his essays on historical materialism, Antonio Labriola proposed an original develop- ment of Marx's thought, summarized in the formula "philosophy of praxis", later taken up and further elaborated by Antonio Gramsci in the Prison Notebooks. Following Palmiro Togliatti's contribution, the Italian intellectual circles, with the help of newly discovered texts, opened up other paths for the "phi- losophy of praxis". Galvano Della Volpe placed emphasis on Marx's criticism of Hegel's philosophy in 1843, while the influence of the Frankfurt School led scholars to focus on the E conomi c and P h i l o- so ph i c M anuscri pts of 1 8 4 4 , and "workerism" on certain sections of the Grundrisse. In recent years, there has been a revival of the "philosophy of praxis" on renewed philological and theoretical bases, yet in continuity with the legacy of Labriola and Gramsci.
