A suspended Cloister

The main building of the Óbidos Technology Park is conceived as a cloister consisting of two superimposed levels. At ground level, two long walls, together with an artificial dune, define a paved public space that, through the irregular openings along its enclosed perimeter, recalls the Portuguese terreiros - traditional open public spaces that have long served as focal points of collective life. This base structure becomes the civic interface of the building: it regulates the flows of arrival and departure, functions as a communal square that prepares the rural setting of Óbidos for urban activities, and forms a naturalized crepidoma for the upper level of the complex.

L’edificio principale del Parco tecnologico a Óbidos è costruito come un chiostro a due ordini sovrapposti. Al piano terra, due lunghi muri, insieme con una duna artificiale, delimitano uno spazio pubblico pavimentato che, grazie alle aperture irregolari del suo margine recintato, ricorda i terreiros portoghesi: ovvero tradizionali spazi pubblici aperti, posti al centro della vita collettiva. Questa struttura basamentale diviene l’interfaccia civica della costruzione perché gestisce i flussi in ingresso e in uscita, si pone come piazza comune per predisporre l’ambiente rurale di Óbidos agli accadimenti urbani e diviene il crepidoma naturalizzato per il secondo ordine dello stabile
