The essay identifies a small corpus of medieval documents, almost entirely unknown, relating to the city of Melfi and offers several approaches to their study. From these sources, the urban environment – both physical and social – emerges clearly, offering valuable evidence for reconstructing the urban history of an important centre of southern Italy.
Il saggio individua un piccolo corpus di documenti, quasi del tutto ignoti, relativi alla città di Melfi e suggerisce alcune proposte di studio. Da queste fonti emerge l’ambiente cittadino, sia fisico, sia sociale, offrendo elementi preziosi per ricostruire la storia urbana di un importante centro dell’Italia meridionale.
