The essay examines handbooks of acting and actor training published in Italy over the past seventy years, based on a corpus of around 180 volumes, including both original works and translations. The study offers a survey of the phenomenon with particular attention to its chronological and editorial dissemination, highlighting the exponential growth since the 2000s and the wide typological variety of publications. Beyond the descriptive dimension, the analysis raises critical questions about the function of these handbooks as tools for the formalisation and transmission of performative knowledge. Through a paradigmatic case study, the article explores the circular relationship between theatrical practice and writing, showing how handbooks have shaped both self-training and institutional teaching, thereby opening new critical perspectives on the pedagogy of acting.

Abstract
The essay examines handbooks of acting and actor training published in Italy over the past seventy years, based on a corpus of around 180 volumes, including both original works and translations. The study offers a survey of the phenomenon with particular attention to its chronological and editorial dissemination, highlighting the exponential growth since the 2000s and the wide typological variety of publications. Beyond the descriptive dimension, the analysis raises critical questions about the function of these handbooks as tools for the formalisation and transmission of performative knowledge. Through a paradigmatic case study, the article explores the circular relationship between theatrical practice and writing, showing how handbooks have shaped both self-training and institutional teaching, thereby opening new critical perspectives on the pedagogy of acting.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
