This study examines the tomb of Cleisthenes in the Kerameikos, briefly mentioned by Pausanias (I.29.6), as a valuable point of departure for reconsidering the history, memory, and apparent oblivion of his figure in Athens. Although often interpreted as a public monument, this study argues that a private funerary context is plausible, given the persistence of elite funerary customs, possible connections to the Alcmaeonids in the Kerameikos, and the tomb’s relative isolation in Pausanias’s account. The monument attests to a residual, nuanced remembrance, complicating the simple dichotomy between “forgotten” and “remembered” and shedding light on Cleisthenes’s status in collective memory in Athens.

Abstract
This study examines the tomb of Cleisthenes in the Kerameikos, briefly mentioned by Pausanias (I.29.6), as a valuable point of departure for reconsidering the history, memory, and apparent oblivion of his figure in Athens. Although often interpreted as a public monument, this study argues that a private funerary context is plausible, given the persistence of elite funerary customs, possible connections to the Alcmaeonids in the Kerameikos, and the tomb’s relative isolation in Pausanias’s account. The monument attests to a residual, nuanced remembrance, complicating the simple dichotomy between “forgotten” and “remembered” and shedding light on Cleisthenes’s status in collective memory in Athens.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
