This essay explores aspects of Rome’s political and cultural environment in the early sixteenth century, from the reign of Alexander VI to that of Julius II. In this frame of time, Donato Bramante introduced a new architecture, modernamente antica, making an innovative contribution to the development of the Renaissance palace. The transformation of the papal capital into an international court provided Bramante with a unique context in which to develop a universal architectural language combining ancient and contemporary models. The opening of the Via Alessandrina for the Jubilee of 1500, entrusted to Cardinal Chamberlain Raffaele Riario, resulted in a unique convergence of supply and demand for housing solutions, targeting a specific patronage: wealthy, cosmopolitan individuals motivated to demonstrate their affiliation with the Roman Curia through recognition in the urban landscape. The essay also comments on Bramante’s proposals by presenting some reliefs made in the first half of the nineteenth century by the Turin architect Carlo Promis.
