Following its abandonment, the Roman amphitheatre of Durrës was re-functionalized through the construction of several cultic spaces. The most significant of these is a chapel containing the city’s most renowned early Byzantine evidence: two extensively discussed mosaic panels. These panels are positioned on the south and west walls of the niche at the chapel’s western end. The mosaic on the south wall shows a figure of doubtful identification between the figures of two angels and two small donors. This study proposes a new iconographic interpretation of this figure, considering the historical context of the city and the personalities that have most influenced its development.

Abstract
Following its abandonment, the Roman amphitheatre of Durrës was re-functionalized through the construction of several cultic spaces. The most significant of these is a chapel containing the city’s most renowned early Byzantine evidence: two extensively discussed mosaic panels. These panels are positioned on the south and west walls of the niche at the chapel’s western end. The mosaic on the south wall shows a figure of doubtful identification between the figures of two angels and two small donors. This study proposes a new iconographic interpretation of this figure, considering the historical context of the city and the personalities that have most influenced its development.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
