Strabo’s Geography is often regarded as a valuable source for reconstructing the boundaries of the satrapies during the Achaemenid period. This article takes as its case study Strabo’s description of Anatolia in Book XII and aims to show how his ethno-territorial divisions indeed reflect those already recorded in the lists of Herodotus, Ctesias, and Ephorus. In particular, it is argued that the fluctuations found in Strabo’s divisions of north-western Anatolia stem from similar variations present in earlier authors and can be attributed to an administrative change that took place at the end of the 5th century BC.

Abstract
Strabo’s Geography is often regarded as a valuable source for reconstructing the boundaries of the satrapies during the Achaemenid period. This article takes as its case study Strabo’s description of Anatolia in Book XII and aims to show how his ethno-territorial divisions indeed reflect those already recorded in the lists of Herodotus, Ctesias, and Ephorus. In particular, it is argued that the fluctuations found in Strabo’s divisions of north-western Anatolia stem from similar variations present in earlier authors and can be attributed to an administrative change that took place at the end of the 5th century BC.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
