The article examines the accounts of Mehmed II’s visit to Hagia Sophia given by the Greek historian Critoboulus of Imbros and the Ottoman historian Tursun Beg, both influenced by Polybian motifs. It also addresses the question of the meaning of the verses spoken by the Sultan on this occasion and reported in the text of Tursun Beg.
