The research project focuses on the study of the support system for detached wall paintings. Although nowadays the detachment of a wall painting from its original wall support is a last resort, it is increasingly necessary to intervene on artefacts that have already been restored in the past due to the deterioration of the artefacts and their support systems. The problem is particularly evident in detached wall paintings that have been relocated to their original site, where the microclimate is unstable and subject to strong solar radiation and significant daily fluctuations in temperature and humidity. Currently, there is no shared methodological, technical and operational approach for designing and carrying out conservation interventions on detached artefacts. The complexity of such interventions consists in the need to analyse the overall system — anchoring, artificial support and painting — in relation to the environmental conditions of conservation. The PhD project aims to define a methodological, technical and operational approach for the informed planning of conservation interventions on detached wall paintings. Such interventions cannot be separated from a multidisciplinaryapproach capable of providing effective solutions for the protection and transmission of the cultural values of this category of assets, which are closely linked to their architectural context of origin.
