In this paper I reconsider the occasion of the first performance of Paul the Silentiary’s Ekphrasis of St. Sophia on the basis of both textual and external evidence. I suggest that the performative context must be taken into account in the overall interpretation of the poem as a document of Justinian’s building and religious policy.

Abstract
In this paper I reconsider the occasion of the first performance of Paul the Silentiary’s Ekphrasis of St. Sophia on the basis of both textual and external evidence. I suggest that the performative context must be taken into account in the overall interpretation of the poem as a document of Justinian’s building and religious policy.File allegati a questo prodotto
