Abstract
Many different texts, spanning from the origins of Arcadia to Morei’s tenure as Cus- tode, portray Arcadia as a homeland in various ways. The idea of Arcadia as both an ancient home- land and a modern refuge for the disciplines – under the guiding authority of poetry – endured for a long time. Equally enduring was the notion that the Arcadian res publica litterarum needed a political structure to protect it, thus offering exemplary values to real-world politics. The pastoral tradition continued for a long time to uphold what was seen as the essential feature of a republic of sapientes: equality, understood as a form of freedom and the basis of concord. These were key words and principles emphasized, with different degrees of aware-ness and nuance, by many prominent figures of early Arcadia.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
