“Arguments for codifying: the International Law Commission and the rules of interpretation”. This essay ex-plores the works of the International Law Commission between the middle and the end of the sixties, when called to codify the international law of treaties. In particular, it presents the wide discussion between the fa-mous international lawyers sitting in the Commission on the arguments for and against codifying the rules of interpretation. With an argument a contrario, it investigates the reasons why at the beginning the majority of the Commission was hostile to the codification of the rules of interpretation to explore why the last decision of the Commission was the inclusion of the Rules of Interpretation in the “Vienna Convention in the Law of Treaties” (art. 31-33). Without answering to the main legal and theoretical question on the reasons why to codify interpretation, nevertheless this essay aims at giving a contribution to the debate on that issue.
