The Florentine colony of Pera possessed peculiar characters that became more pronounced in the later 15th century, particularly during the rule of Lorenzo de' Medici. Diplomacy, market, anti-Medicean dissent, and polysemic relations with the Ottoman Sultanate made Pera the most complex of the Florentine communities abroad. The Magnifico attempted to regain control of it with the support of the consuls and Benedetto Dei whose unpublished correspondence opens new glimpses into the circulation of information and the spy network that was supposed to link the eastern and western Mediterranean.

La colonia fiorentina di Pera possedeva caratteri peculiari che si accentuarono nel secondo Quattrocento, in particolare durante il governo di Lorenzo de’ Medici. Diplomazia, mercato, dissenso antimediceo, rapporti polisemici con il Sultanato ottomano rendevano Pera la più complessa tra le comunità fiorentine all’estero. Il Magnifico tentò di recuperarne il controllo con il supporto dei consoli e di Benedetto Dei il cui carteggio inedito apre nuovi squarci sulla circolazione delle informazioni e sulla rete spionistica che avrebbe dovuto collegare il Mediterraneo orientale e occidentale.
